How Long Multiplication Works in Math Cards

A two-digit multiplication problem loads on the card. The scratch pad shows the column layout with the multiplier below the multiplicand. Kids work through each step:

1
Multiply by ones digitMultiply the top number by the ones digit of the bottom number, carrying as needed
2
Multiply by tens digitMultiply the top number by the tens digit, shifting left one place
3
Add the partial productsAdd both rows to get the final product
4
Submit the answerEnter the product โ€” correct = next problem, wrong = run ends

Connected to Times Tables Practice

Long multiplication is only as fast as the facts underneath it. A child who hesitates on 7 ร— 8 mid-problem will struggle to complete long multiplication accurately. Math Cards includes a times tables practice mode and a standard multiplication facts mode โ€” both share the same daily practice bucket so kids can mix fluency drilling with column method practice.

Ready for Long Multiplication?

A child is ready for long multiplication when they can answer any basic multiplication fact (2ร— through 12ร—) without counting on fingers. The times tables practice mode in Math Cards is the best way to build that fluency first.

Why Accuracy Matters More Than Speed

In Math Cards, one wrong answer ends the run. This is especially important for long multiplication โ€” kids who rush through the column method make carrying errors that compound. The high-score format rewards accuracy over speed, which is the right habit to build.
