What the Practice Looks Like
A fraction appears on the card โ for example:
The child enters the simplified numerator and denominator separately. Both must be correct โ if the fraction isn't fully reduced, the answer is marked wrong.
Difficulty Levels
Small denominators
Fractions with denominators up to 12. GCF is usually 2 or 3.
Larger denominators
Denominators up to 24. Requires finding GCF of larger numbers.
Complex fractions
Large denominators with non-obvious GCFs. Tests deep understanding of factors.
Why Simplifying Matters
Simplifying fractions isn't just a standalone skill โ it's required in almost every fraction operation. Adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions all often require simplifying the result. A child who can't quickly find the GCF will slow down on every fraction problem.
- Builds understanding of greatest common factor (GCF)
- Develops number sense for factor relationships
- Makes all other fraction operations faster and cleaner
