Same Process as Adding — Different Operation
Subtracting fractions uses identical steps to adding fractions, which makes it a great follow-on skill to practice. Kids who have mastered adding fractions will find this mode a natural next step — the procedure is the same, but the subtraction step reveals whether they truly understand the method or were pattern-matching.
- Find the least common denominator (LCD)
- Convert both fractions to equivalent fractions with the LCD
- Subtract the numerators (denominator stays the same)
- Simplify the result to lowest terms
Difficulty Levels
Related denominators
One denominator is a multiple of the other — minimal conversion needed.
Unrelated denominators
Both fractions need conversion. Requires finding the true LCD.
Complex values
Larger numerators and denominators with non-obvious common denominators.
A Good Pairing with Addition
Practicing addition and subtraction of fractions together is one of the most effective ways to deepen understanding. Math Cards keeps each mode separate with its own high score — so kids can focus on one operation at a time, or alternate between them to test whether the understanding is truly flexible.
